SmartSwitch DC4 in Action: Four Ways to Simplify Onboard DC Control
Modern onboard power systems are becoming increasingly connected. Batteries, charging, inverters and monitoring can already be managed through the Victron ecosystem.
But what about the DC-powered services?
Lighting, water pumps, ventilation and other onboard functions can still rely on separate switches, relays and control points. For installers and system designers, that can mean additional wiring, more components and a less integrated experience for the end user.
SmartSwitch DC4 helps close that gap.
Developed by Energy Solutions, SmartSwitch DC4 is a four-channel solid-state switching controller that brings compatible DC loads directly into the Victron environment, all controllable via a Victron GX device, touchscreen, or Victron VRM.
Users can switch, dim and monitor connected services from one familiar interface, with remote access available through Victron VRM.
But what does that look like in a real installation?
Our four-part SmartSwitch in Action video series demonstrates how the technology works in a campervan installation, from initial configuration to everyday switching and remote control.
1. Getting Started: SmartSwitch and Cerbo GX
Fully compatible with Victron VE.Can systems, users can switch, dim and monitor connected directly from the Victron GX touchscreen, with remote access available through Victron VRM.
Users can access SmartSwitch settings, configure individual channels and assign names to suit their installation.
Whether controlling lighting, water pumps or other compatible DC equipment, this flexibility makes it easier to organise onboard services around the way a vehicle or vessel is used.
2. Water Pump Control: Simple Switching
Water pumps are a practical example of how SmartSwitch can simplify everyday onboard control.
In this demonstration, the campervan's water pump is configured as a latching output, allowing it to be switched on or off directly from the Victron touchscreen.
Rather than relying on a separate physical switch, the pump can be controlled from the same central control screen used for other onboard services.
For installers, SmartSwitch offers an alternative to traditional switching arrangements, helping reduce control wiring and consolidate compatible loads.
3. Lighting and Dimming: Control to Suit Your Needs
Lighting is another area where digital switching offers practical advantages.
SmartSwitch supports dimming on all four channels, allowing compatible DC lighting to be adjusted to suit different activities and preferences.
From bright task lighting to softer evening illumination, users can manage their lighting through the Victron interface.
Dimming can also help reduce electrical consumption when full brightness isn't required, an important consideration for battery-powered installations.
4. Remote Control: Stay Connected Through Victron VRM
SmartSwitch control isn't limited to being physically onboard.
Through Victron VRM and Remote Console, users can remotely access and control compatible services connected through SmartSwitch, provided the system has the necessary connectivity.
In the final demonstration, lighting is controlled from a mobile device and the water pump is switched off remotely.
It's a useful capability for anyone wanting to check or manage connected services while away from their campervan or boat.
One Screen. Full Control.
SmartSwitch DC4 brings together several useful capabilities in one compact controller:
- Four individually configurable DC switching channels
- 12V and 24V DC system compatibility
- Switching, dimming and current monitoring
- Current limiting and thermal protection
- VE.Can communication with Victron GX systems
- Remote access through Victron VRM
- Maximum combined current capacity of 15A, with 5A per channel and up to 10A on Channel 4.
For boatbuilders, vehicle converters and installers already working with Victron systems, SmartSwitch DC4 offers a straightforward way to bring compatible DC services into one familiar control environment.
Developed by Energy Solutions, with local-based technical support available, SmartSwitch helps simplify installations while giving end users greater control over their onboard systems.
Whether you're designing a new electrical system or upgrading an existing Victron installation, SmartSwitch DC4 helps bring compatible DC services together through one integrated control system for installers and end users alike.
