Apprenticeship Week

Employee Spotlight for Apprenticeship Week

This year’s theme for Apprenticeship Week is 'Skills For Life' and we wanted to share the learning journey and life skills of one of our apprentices at Energy Solutions.

Meet Thomas Knowles, one of our talented apprentices currently learning Manufacturing Engineering.

Tom excelled in mathematics and related subjects and his interest in engineering grew. He was motivated by the importance of engineers and the value of engineering in industries.

As one of a team of Engineers, Tom's typical day consists of designing electrical parts using CAD software, problem-solving, attending project meetings, and setting up BOMs (a bill of materials). Once a week, he attends university to work on his degree course.

The level 6 Manufacturing Engineering apprenticeship lasts 3.5 to 4 years and consists of a degree followed by an End-Point Assessment (EPA). Now in his third year, we asked Tom if he had any advice for anyone wishing to pursue a career in engineering.

"The workload can be challenging, balancing projects at work and modules at university simultaneously can be a lot to manage. If engineering is the right path for you, then a good ability in Maths will be needed. I would also suggest familiarising yourself with computers and software, as modern engineering involves various software tools.

You’ll develop important vital skills. So far, I’ve gained an understanding of electrical systems/components, proficiency in CAD software, and knowledge of how to apply my ideas. I also enjoy collaborating with my fellow engineers.”

We asked Tom to sum up the best bits so far on his apprenticeship and what he hopes to achieve:

“The highlights of this apprenticeship have been creating a robot arm, designing a project for NATO, and working on a project for the military.

Energy Solutions has been very supportive, providing me with all the necessary skills to carry out my role through work shadowing and engineering knowledge.

I aim to continue improving my understanding and knowledge as an electrical engineer."
