Northern Lights redefines the engine room using hybrid propulsion

Northern Lights, Inc. (NLI), an innovator in the marine-diesel market, is redefining the traditional engine room with an unmatched hybrid-marine solution. NLI combines its high-performance Lugger propulsion engines with BAE Systems' HybriDrive® Propulsion System. In service in over 3,500 applications worldwide, this is the world's most successful series hybrid.

The system uses a Propulsion Control System (PCS) to efficiently direct power produced from the electric generator for immediate use, or holds it in the Energy Storage System (ESS) to provide clean, quiet power without the engine, while the propulsion motor provides power to the prop. The system can be customized to fit a myriad of marine applications. "The entire package is designed to be clean, quiet and environmentally responsible," said NLI vice president Mike Maynard. "Our hybrid-marine solution eliminates wet stacking and will reduce both energy waste and fuel costs."

Because its world class components are fully scalable, the NLI hybrid-marine system provides far greater flexibility in engine room layout. It will run not only as a standard electric propulsion system, but can be configured into an auxiliary power kit to provide all of the ship's service AC power without the waste and pollution associated with underloading. The hybrid system can even be outfitted for accessory power for modern vessels' complex systems of thrusters and winches.

Components for the hybrid-marine system were displayed at the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show, in booth 750 of the Yacht Designers' Tent. The system can be configured for specific vessel needs in the yacht and commercial markets, and the hybrid display and interactive video will demonstrate the capability and flexibility of this truly remarkable innovation.

NLI is renowned in the marine industry for providing reliable, durable and simple-to-use power and propulsion systems. Using BAE Systems' HybriDrive Propulsion and integration capabilities we are proud to now offer a hybrid-marine solution superior to other systems currently on the market.

Energy Solutions Solar Complete Local Housing Project

Solar Panels

Energy Solutions has recently completed a solar PV installation for Town and Country Housing Group on a new housing association project in Gravesend, Kent. The development at Epsom Close consists of 16 houses, 10 of the properties were built for Social Rent and 6 are for shared ownership. To meet the exacting standards of new building regulations the properties were built to sustainable homes level 3, Energy Solutions designed, specified, installed and commissioned 1.29kWp of Solar PV (Photovoltaic) systems onto the 16 individual properties. The kits consisted of 6 x 215w Schuco solar PV panels and a Sunny boy SB1200 inverter.

The major benefit for tenants is that via their solar kit each property will be able to generate approximately 1075kW of electricity a year, about 20-25% of the average usage for properties of their size. This means a direct reduction for tenants on their electricity requirements and bills - on average around £130 less per year.

For the Housing Association the return comes from the connection to the Government's Feed in Tariff, which allows the owner to receive a revenue stream for the next 25 years, a payment for energy fed back to the grid. At the Epsom Close project the return from the feed in tariff will be approximately £450 per dwelling per year. This is payable for 25 years, index linked and TAX free, giving a total of £11,250 revenue for the Housing Group per property.

Northern Lights' low noise, durable generators now available with smaller, more efficient sound enclosures.

Northern Lights Generators

Energy Solutions, Northern Lights Generators sole UK agent, are delighted to now be able to offer customers the latest sound enclosures from the company. Northern Lights' revolutionary new sound enclosure shares a base frame with the generator set, creating a compact power and sound attenuation package and boasts 23% less overall cubic volume than the previous enclosed units. This development enhances Northern Lights generators which are already leaders in their class as shown in 2007, when an independently certified test (by TUV-EPS) was commissioned by Victron Energy. Marine generator sets were tested at 10kW and below (50 Hz ratings, 1500-3000 RPM). Of the 19 generator sets tested from the world's preeminent manufacturers, Northern Lights M773LW2 was deemed the quietest, at less than 65 dBA with no electrical load. The second quietest machine tested was also a Northern Lights - the M673LD2, at fewer than 66 dBA.

The new sound enclosures reduce those levels even further, with Northern Lights own studies showing even greater attenuation and easier service capability.

Energy Solutions Managing Director Paul Holland explains what this means for their customers: "The reduction in overall size means that the models can be fitted in craft that have restricted space but still need the benefit of low noise levels. Whereas previously owners may have had to look at higher RPM's in order to get the power they need in a smaller space, now they can look at the more durable Northern Lights generator sets."

The new sound enclosures are currently available on models M673LD3, M673L3, M773LW3, M843NW3 and M944T, with the rest of the generator line to follow.
